IN SHORT

Serato DJ Pro 2.1 Beta and Serato DJ Lite 1.1 are out and come with the possibility to stream Tidal tracks directly in both programs. This comes in addition to the announcement made a few days ago that streaming from SoundCloud will be possible in Serato, expanding the possibilities for DJ’s that want more options besides their downloaded library tracks.

The feature only works if you have a Tidal subscription, which costs USD 9.99 or USD 19.99/month for the HIFI version, which delivers high-definition audio and video.

In addition to that Serato also introduces a new expansion pack: Serato Play. This pack enables DJing without a controller, and it comes with support for a splitter cable and a rudimentary software mixer.

Tidal Support

The interface is pretty simple, both in Serato DJ Pro and Serato DJ Lite.

It’s possible to search the Tidal track catalog from within Serato DJ, and add the Tidal tracks to your own playlists in Serato DJ Pro and Serato DJ Lite. If you have the HIFI Tidal subscription, you will be able to stream those high-resolution FLAC files right into Serato DJ.

However, there are a few limitations. First of all, it’s not possible to download the track for offline use. You need a working internet connection in order to be able to use the integration. This is a big drawback because as often internet connections in clubs and venues are not the best, and you certainly don’t want your set to be compromised because your connection is bad.

The other thing is that when you are using Tidal tracks you cannot record your sets in Serato, for obvious copyright reasons. Still, it remains possible to record your set by other means.

Serato Play

Serato Play is a new expansion pack in Serato DJ Pro 2.1 Beta that allows you to DJ offline, without a connected controller. In order to make this possible, Serato DJ included a rudimentary mixer and support for keyboard shortcuts. Also, there is support for a splitter cable, so one mono channel in your headphone out can be sent to your headphones while the othe goes out the speakers.

This is a great addition, both as a training feature (imagine you want to quickly practice a set on the plane and don’t have a controller at hand) or as a backup feature when your controller dies down and the party needs to go on.
